HBO documentary filmmaker Sheila Nevins graduated from Barnard College with a Bachelor of Arts in English and from the Yale School of Drama with a Master of Fine Arts.

Beginning her career with the foreign affairs organization United States Information Agency, Sheila Nevins also worked for Time–Life Films as well as network giants ABC and CBS. Nevins joined HBO in 1979 and now serves as President of HBO Documentary Films.

Sheila Nevins has earned accolades as a producer of hundreds of documentaries for HBO. Inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame in 2000, Nevins earned the Governors Award in 2009 at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Sheila Nevins also has received lifetime or career achievement awards from CINE Competition, the Banff World Television Festival, the International Documentary Association, and the News & Documentary Emmy Awards. In 2002, the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures honored Nevins with a humanitarian award.

Sheila Nevins has produced several well-liked HBO series such as Taxicab Confessions, America Undercover, Cathouse: The Series, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, Real Sex, and The Alzheimer’s Project. Other HBO films produced by Nevins include Wonderland, Mumia Abu-Jamal: A Case for Reasonable Doubt?, Gang War: Bangin’ in Little Rock, Brett Killed Mom: A Sister’s Diary, and Sergio.

Those films and other HBO productions have won Sheila Nevins numerous honors, including more than 30 Peabody Awards, almost 50 Emmys, and more than 20 Oscars. Nevins also has won awards for her filmmaking with HBO from CableACE Awards and the International Documentary Association.

Along with assistance from other producers, Nevins continues to create high-quality productions annually for HBO. After more than 30 years at HBO, Sheila Nevins remains a dominant figure in the documentary industry.
