Golf, Sheldon Krieger
January, 2011
by Sheldon Krieger
The game of golf. The game of golf traces its roots to 15th century Scotland. As early as 1497, Scotsmen played a game that involved hitting a pebble through a natural course with sticks or other available instruments. Some historians maintain that as early as 1421 certain other precursor games also influenced the game that became golf. Whatever the case may be, the game continued to develop and spread since its inception in Scotland. England’s King Charles I and Mary Queen of Scots hold responsibility for initially popularizing the game in the United Kingdom and France. The first formal set of rules governing the game was assembled in 1744 by the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith club, and the first 18-hole course was constructed in 1895. The game of golf continued to grow and develop as it developed into a sport. The United States Golf Association (USGA) was subsequently founded in 1894 to supervise the game in the United States and Mexico, and by the turn of the century, more than 1,000 clubs operated across the nation. Golf also gained induction into the Olympics around the same time. Additionally, the expense related with professional golf equipment diminished dramatically for a variety of reasons. Consequently, golf became increasingly available to less affluent players. Today, golf remains a popular game played by professionals and amateur enthusiasts around the world. In 2009, the National Golf Foundation claimed that approximately 28.6 million individuals over the age of 6 golfed, and Golf 20/20 recorded a total of $76 billion dollars spent on the game in 2008.
