Founded in 1980, the non-profit organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) supports animal rights and welfare through multiple initiatives. PETA’s mission seeks to eliminate the use of animals for food, clothing, experimentation, and entertainment. To that end, PETA supports vegan living and provides vegan resources to people who will pledge to undertake 30 days of veganism. The organization also supports animal birth control, ethical treatment of companion animals, and ending the killing of animals generally considered as pests, such as raccoons, coyotes, and rabbits. As one of the most well-known and largest animal rights organizations in the world, PETA sponsors multiple animal rights campaigns and initiatives featuring some of the most recognized faces in the entertainment industry. Pamela Anderson, Stevie-O, Alicia Silverstone, and Bill Maher are all PETA supporters who have appeared in advertisements for the organization. PETA also sponsors consumer boycotts focusing on companies that mistreat animals in the course of doing business, such as Avon and General Motors. Over the years, PETA’s initiatives have been directly responsible for many changes in animal welfare. In 2009, retailer JC Penney removed fur from its product offerings. Many advertisers have also stopped exploiting chimpanzees and apes in advertisements, and several research facilities have ceased using animals for experimentation. PETA has become a worldwide movement since its founding. There are many ways that you can get involved in protecting animal welfare. To learn more visit www.peta.org.
