  • The Harbor House, Spiteri Builders
    June, 2010
Nearly 40 years ago in Oakland, California, a schoolteacher named Olive Freeman decided to help her poor community by offering free tutoring, gathering donations of books, clothing, food, and other necessities and distributing them to those in need. Soon she was joined by other volunteers—a baker, a mail carrier, a railroad worker, and others. Thus began what is now The Harbor House, which today has served more than 100,000 people in Oakland. Recently relocating from the city’s Fruitvale district to the San Antonio district, its mission has remained constant: to bring hope and help to the needy through a variety of appropriate and effective programs. The 2000 census indicates that Oakland is the second most diverse city in the country. The San Antonio district, located southeast of Lake Merritt, was shown to be the most diverse community in the entire nation. This astonishing mix of people and ethnicities makes the neighborhood a distinctive one with a lively and vibrant richness that its inhabitants love. Music, food, art, and language from nearly every part of the world can be experienced in this area. However, the neighborhood—like much of Oakland—has been ravaged by economic issues, including unemployment and underemployment, both made worse by the recession of recent times. Illiteracy and lack of adequate education are additional challenges this community faces, and the Harbor House attempts to address them all. This remarkable organization has developed youth, education, and economic development programs. With an abiding respect for all members and cultures of the community, and a philosophy based on valuing the spiritual aspect of people and the community, Harbor House has been successful in its efforts to enrich the lives it touches. Youth programs include academic tutoring and enrichment activities, sports, field trips, and cultural events. Harbor House also offers practical, skill-building opportunities such as youth internship programs where participants receive training in a variety of ways including job readiness, community service, teamwork, and diversity awareness. The Harbor House education program offers a wealth of resources for adult and youth learners alike, including English and literacy classes. Its adult English classes target a community that is traditionally the hardest to reach—those with little or no education. Providing a safe place to learn and practice English, its documented success is due to its personalized curricula, as well as the social and creative endeavors it offers, such as the Harbor House Quilt Project. Harbor House depends almost entirely on volunteer workers and the generosity of partners in the community. Spiteri Builders is a highly reputable construction firm located in Redwood City, California, and is committed to helping the community by sponsoring The Harbor House.
