A Brief Overview of Otolaryngology: Part 2, by Dr. Stefan Kieserman , Dr. Stefan Kieserman's Blog on Bigsight

According to statistics from the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), one in ten people currently residing in North America suffer from some degree of hearing loss. Children who inherit genetic abnormalities from their parents can benefit markedly from the services of a skilled ear, nose, and throat specialist. As medical science and hearing loss research progress, doctors, scientists, and medical technology engineers continue to discover numerous actionable approaches to facilitate hearing restoration. Partially or totally deaf individuals who enlist the support of an ENT specialist may not recover fully, but the chances are high that their hearing will be restored somewhat. Likewise, those coping with ringing in the ears (tinnitus), minor to severe issues with balance, cranial and/or facial nerve problems, associated nerve pain, and even ear infections can find relief with the help of an experienced otolaryngologist.
Data gleaned from the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery singles out chronic sinusitis as an ailment that affects tens of millions of Americans. AAO-HNS estimates indicate that ear, nose, and throat specialists diagnose approximately 35 million new cases of chronic sinusitis in the U.S. population on an annual basis, establishing the disease as one of today’s most common health concerns. In an effort to encourage results-oriented preventative care of the sinuses, an ENT doctor will coach his or her patients about proper sinus maintenance, also utilizing an extensive array of tools and techniques to mitigate allergies, a compromised sense of smell, snoring, sleep apnea, and breathing blockages. Due to the fact that otolaryngology encompasses surgical work as well as fundamental clinical diagnostic and curative activity, people interested in altering the shape of the nose for aesthetic or medical reasons normally consult with an ENT specialist prior to entering the operating room, whether or not that doctor will be responsible for performing the surgery itself.
