  • Helpful Safety Tips for Traveling Abroad, Steven Koinis
    May, 2011
    by Steven Koinis

Taking proper pre-trip planning and precautionary measures for excursions abroad can mean the difference between a memorable vacation or business trip and a complicated or disastrous experience. To ensure safe travel to foreign lands, the U.S. Department of State provides a few important tips that individuals and families can follow to make their adventures abroad that much safer.

    1) Sign and fill out the emergency information section in your passport. Make sure you possess the necessary documents (i.e. valid passport, visa, etc.) and you received any mandatory vaccinations and related paperwork to enter the country.

    2) Make copies of your itinerary and passport and visa data pages to leave with family or friends. Ensure that they can contact you in case of an emergency.

    3) Check to see whether your health insurance covers overseas care and emergency expenses, such as a medical evacuation. If not, consider purchasing travel insurance.

    4) Read up on relevant local and government laws and regulations pertinent to the places you will be visiting. Some of this data can be found on the State Department’s website at http://travel.state.gov.

    5) While sightseeing or journeying abroad, take necessary precautions to avoid becoming a victim of crime. Good suggestions to follow include wearing plain clothes and jewelry, carrying minimum amounts of cash, and avoid leaving suitcases and bags unattended in public locations.

    6) Lastly, travelers visiting foreign locations should consider signing up online for the State Department’s free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program at https://travelregistration.state.gov. By keeping U.S. officials notified of your travel plans, they can easily contact you in case of an emergency at home or a crisis happening where you are visiting. This information remains strictly confidential except to family or friends who you authorize to view it.
