  • The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, Steven Selchow
    August, 2010
The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) is a crucial resource for news, updates, and developments in the world of cosmetic surgery. The organization’s website is easy to navigate and pleasantly laid out, so that users can access the abundance of information it has to offer with ease. By providing a well-maintained website, the AACS is providing critical service to the world by ensuring that the practice of cosmetic surgery remains transparent for the public. Furthermore, the organization conducts surveys of the general public to guarantee that cosmetic surgery is a field of medicine that can consistently respond to and serves the public’s needs. Most recently, the AACS published the results of a study that found that Americans are increasingly comfortable discussing cosmetic surgery. The study found that individuals feel more secure in undertaking a cosmetic procedure because of the increased acceptability within society. The website features a helpful directory for prospective patients on cosmetic surgeries and procedures, including tips on choosing a good surgeon or doctor, an informative FAQ, and a question-and-answer forum. The website is also useful for surgeons and doctors from all fields, enabling all practitioners to stay up-to-date and well informed about the status of cosmetic surgery in America today, including regulations, press releases, and FAQ. The benefits to becoming a member of the AACS are that you receive discounted fees for all academy-sponsored meetings, plus a subscription to the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery and Surge. Furthermore, members obtain access to and are entered into the membership directory. Additionally, new members are listed in Surge. All members of the Academy are given the option of a professional liability insurance program. To learn more, visit www.cosmeticsurgery.org.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dental school graduates who subsequently pursue another four years of surgical residency training in a hospital. In addition to their specialized field of dental surgery, they also complete rotations in related medical fields, such as anesthesiology, plastic surgery, emergency medicine, and internal medicine. At the end of this period, surgeons are equipped with the skills necessary to diagnosis and treat oral and facial diseases, injuries, and defect, identifying the proper steps that must be taken in order to correct the problem. Many oral and maxillofacial surgeons complete the requirements for a medical degree or another advanced degree in a secondary specialty area. Dentists refer their patients to oral and maxillofacial surgeons for a variety of surgical requirements and other functions. Some of the procedures that they perform include dentoalveolar surgery, which treats diseases of the teeth and gums, such as impacted teeth; reconstructive surgery, which repairs bone structures in the upper and lower jaw, as well as problems that result from trauma; and dental implants, which replace lost teeth. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons treat facial trauma, facial pain, temporomandibular joint disorders, and other facial deformities. They are capable of helping patients that suffering from sleep apnea and obstructive breathing patterns. Due to their expertise with facial reconstruction and restructuring, oral and maxillofacial surgeons often perform cosmetic facial surgeries, most of which can be completed directly in their offices on an outpatient basis.
  • Interview with Steven Selchow (2/2), Steven Selchow
    November, 2010
Question: How does alcohol consumption contribute to skin damage? Steven Selchow: Alcohol causes the small blood vessels in the face to dilate, increasing blood flow near the skin’s surface. Excessive alcohol intake can cause these delicate vessels to break, resulting in a permanently flushed, red skin tone. Alcohol is also an astringent, meaning that it shrinks the skin’s pores. Smaller pores are more prone to clogging, increasing the chances of developing acne. Additionally, alcohol tends to inhibit sleep, despite its categorization as a depressive substance. Less sleep leads to higher levels of stress and fatigue, compounding alcohol’s destructive capabilities. Lack of sleep produces bags and dark circles under the eyes and can cause the skin to sag. Likewise, stress forces muscles in the face to conform expressively. Regular frowning or furrowing of the brow can alter a person’s facial muscle memory in a negative manner. Question: In conjunction with not smoking, avoiding excessive sun exposure and alcohol consumption, minimizing everyday stress, and getting plenty of sleep, what other measures do you recommend taking to optimize the skin’s appearance? Steven Selchow: There are a wealth of innovative, convenient, and pain-free cosmetic procedures available today that are designed to enhance one’s natural aesthetic without surgery. At Rejuv Skin and Laser Clinic, we carefully assess the condition of a patient’s skin before initiating restorative procedures. Those who wish to eliminate mild to moderate wrinkles and acne scarring are excellent candidates for a Cool Touch Laser treatment. The Cool Touch Laser procedure reduces signs of aging and tightens the skin, requiring no down time following an office visit. Individuals with more pronounced wrinkles or sun damage stand to benefit a great deal from an Erbium laser peel, a deep, non-chemical peel that vaporizes an extremely thin layer of the epidermis while also stimulating collagen production. Likewise, photo rejuvenation utilizes variable pulsed light to reduce brown spots and redness exacerbated by the sun’s UV rays. Many clients at Rejuv Skin and Laser Clinic also undergo Triniti Total Facial Renewal, a treatment process that combines skin tightening, wrinkle reduction, and photo rejuvenation. These are only a few of the techniques I employ to beautify a patient’s skin. • Steven Selchow, MD, DDS, on the Advantages of VelaShape, By Steven Selchow, MD, DDS
    November, 2011
An accomplished cosmetic surgeon, Steven Selchow, MD, DDS, owns and operates Rejuv Skin & Laser Clinic in Eagan, Minnesota. VelaShape is a safe and nearly painless method for reducing cellulite and achieving a well-toned body.

Cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the procedure provides an alternative to more invasive methods of body firming. Treatment specifically targets cellulite on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and love handles and can reduce the circumference of the thighs as well.

Results will appear gradually during the course of a personalized treatment regime, but after four treatment sessions, patients should begin recognizing notable improvements in their appearance. Utilizing elōs technology, VelaShape achieves its results through a combination of infrared light energy, vacuum and mechanical massage, and bi-polar radiofrequency.

By applying these forces to a localized area, the treatment improves lymphatic drainage and increases stored energy metabolism. As a result, the actual size of fat cells and chambers decreases. Recognized widely in the media for its benefits, VelaShape has been featured on television shows including Dr. Phil, Rachael Ray, and Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

VelaShape has also appeared in the Dermatology Times, More magazine, Allure magazine, Shape magazine, OK Weekly, The Wall Street Journal, and other popular publications. In 2009, readers of the American Health & Beauty online magazine voted VelaShape their number one procedure for treating cellulite. To learn more about VelaShape, visit Velashape.com.
