Tamar
Ackerman

In 2008, Tamar Ackerman graduated with a B.A. in Psychology and Jewish History from New York University. As a student, Ms. Ackerman remained involved in art. She functioned as an Art Therapy Intern at Kittay House, a senior independent living facility in the Bronx, during her final year in college. In the summer before her final semester, Ms. Ackerman joined Federation Employment and Guidance Service Health and Human Services System, an organization devoted to assisting individuals with psychiatric disorders. She led sessions on art therapy, people skills, collage making, and photography. In the summer of 2009, Tamar Ackerman taught art to eight-year-old girls in New York City. Subsequently, Ms. Ackerman served as an intern at the Bronx Children’s Psychiatric Center, an inpatient hospital. For nearly a year, she worked with 8-to-14 year olds with emotional and behavioral problems, offering guidance through art therapy. At present, Tamar Ackerman serves as an intern at the Henry Ittleson Center for Child Research & Day Treatment Center in the Bronx and as a summer staff member at the Rebecca School in Manhattan. At the Henry Ittleson Center, she runs group sessions, provides individualized art therapy, and acts as a primary therapist, utilizing verbal, play, and art modalities. At the Rebecca School, she is involved in a weekly after-school creative arts program, following the DIR/floor time model for working with children on the autism spectrum.
