Teresa Ankney | Head of the School at Friendship School

Eldersburg, Maryland

For nearly 10 years, Dr. Teresa Ankney has filled the role of Head of School at the Friendship School, an educational institution based in Eldersburg, Maryland. Serving students in grades one through eight who have language-based learning differences, the Friendship School specializes in the Orton-Gillingham method of multisensory instruction. Whether studying core academic subjects or exploring other areas such as computer literacy, music, or physical education, students receive their education in one-to-one sessions or small-group settings. As the Head of School, Dr. Ankney directs the school’s development, faculty training, accreditation process, and business office, among other duties. Additionally, she focuses on creating and nurturing relationships with organizations, corporations, and educational establishments.

Prior to her tenure at the Friendship School, Dr. Ankney taught at The Catholic University of America, Hood College, Mount St. Mary’s University, and Stevenson University, formerly Villa Julie College. In addition, Dr. Ankney spent seven years as Director of the Office of Service Learning and the Bonner Scholars Program at Hood College, where she received the Martha E. Church Endowment Prize for Leadership and Service.

A Maryland.com Women of Achievement awardee, Dr. Ankney previously worked as a Family Partnership Support Group Facilitator, in which capacity she mentored single teen mothers who lacked a high school education and family support. Dr. Ankney has also performed community service for Jemicy School, where she tutored children with dyslexia using the Orton-Gillingham system.

Teresa Ankney holds three degrees. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Bethany College and went on to earn both a Master of Arts in Applied Social Research and a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology with a minor in Economics from The Catholic University of America.
