Concentrations Available at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Thomas Mengesha
October, 2011
By Thomas Mengesha
An independent, American Bar Association-accredited law school based in the state of Michigan, the Thomas M. Cooley Law School currently stands as one of the largest and most diverse law schools in the United States. Students at Cooley have the opportunity to participate in a variety of legal disciplines, ranging from intellectual property and international law to business transactions and litigation. Here is a brief overview of some prominent academic concentrations available at Cooley.
Intellectual Property: One of the fastest-growing legal fields in countries across the world, this concentration includes concepts found in patent and trademark law, among others. With many nations feeling the impact of globalization, intellectual property rights has become one of the most contentious issues dividing developing nations and their wealthier counterparts. In addition to a world-class education in the tenets of intellectual property law, participants enjoy access to multiple externship placements in the United States and abroad.
Litigation: Another popular course of study at Cooley, the program in Litigation prepares students for their careers as criminal or civil litigators. Defined as the conduct of a lawsuit, litigation requires an extensive knowledge of courtroom procedure and precedent. However, because few lawsuits actually end in a full trial to conclusion, effective litigators must be well versed in skills such as alternative dispute resolution and negotiation. Through its series of clinics, Cooley allows students to gain the practical legal experience necessary to secure a quality job after graduation. Students at Cooley can also choose to participate in externships with private firms, public defenders, legal aids, and prosecutors.
Business Transactions: Through its Business Transactions program, Cooley teaches students how to structure, negotiate, and implement a variety of business transactions. Upon successful completion, students can expect to play an active role in a number of legal fields, including labor, business, sports, entertainment, and real estate. As with the majority of programs at Cooley, students in the Business Transaction curriculum enjoy access to several externship opportunities with government agencies, corporate counsel offices, and law firms that concentrate on business transactions.
Environmental Law: One of the most complex legal fields today, environmental law governs the interaction of people with the natural environment. Students in the Environmental Law program at Cooley have the chance to learn about a number of exciting topics that pertain to several legal fields.
