A Brief Overview: Integrative Medicine, by Tim Chapman , Tim Chapman's Blog on Bigsight
October, 2011
Integrative therapy, a combination of both allopathic and homeopathic medicine, fuses theories from conventional medicinal practices with more alternative approaches and strategies. In this method, practitioners focus on the body as a whole, rather than as disconnected symptoms or parts. As a result, doctors look to methods that enhance the mind, body, and spirit in order to diagnose and treat patients more effectively and with long-lasting results.
According to a senior scientist at the National Institutes of Health, “Patients want to be considered as whole human beings in the context of their world.” It is this approach which pushes integrative medicine into new realms of practice and methodology. In fact, science continues to reveal the deep and intricate connections between mind and body, including immune and nerve functions. Practitioners of integrative medicine focus their treatments on the spiritual, psychological, and emotional aspects of an illness as much as on the direct symptoms. Nutrition plays a major role in such practices, as do meditation, massage, and other more alternative therapies, such as reflexology.
