Temple University’s classical and jazz station, WRTI-FM, presents entertaining, informative, cutting-edge content for those who live in Philadelphia and the tri-state region. Tobias Poole, Operating Director of WRTI-FM, is the man behind the music. Tobias Poole proudly runs this station that boasts more than 391,000 listeners each week and more than 21,000 active members. The station’s Pennsylvania broadcast signal extends north to Wilkes-Barre and Scranton and west to Harrisburg. Listeners can tune in to WRTI-FM from as far south as Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Dover, Delaware.

Tobias Poole joined WRTI-FM more than two decades ago as a staffer and made his first big leap to Chief Engineer three years later. When Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia member Ted Eldredge moved to Florida, Mr. Poole was appointed the station’s General Manager. A veteran of both the university and WRTI-FM, Tobias Poole teaches at Temple University’s Department of Broadcasting Telecommunications and Mass Media as an Adjunct Professor, and in 2008, he gained admission to the Temple 20-Year Club, which honors those who have been with the university for two decades.

Prior to his career at WRTI-FM, Tobias Poole gained invaluable experience as WBST-FM’s Chief Radio Engineer in Muncie, Indiana. In addition, Mr. Poole served as a Radio and Television Engineer for WTLW-TV in Lima, Ohio; WOUB-AM/FM and TV in Athens, Ohio; and WOUZ-FM in Zanesville, Ohio. Mr. Poole keeps current in his profession and shares information with others in the field through his memberships in the Society of Professional Audio Recording Services, the Society of Broadcast Engineers Inc., and the National Broadcasting Society – Alpha Epsilon Rho. In addition to his professional affiliations, Tobias Poole employs his gifts for social good and supports the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia, comprised of 27 centers across the city run by Philadelphia police officers that provide 26,000 youngsters with programs including athletic, educational, and cultural opportunities.

    Responsible for the direction and outcomes of more than one sub-unit or a department that supports the business operations of the University. Manages a major department or multiple subunits that provide operational support to the University, under the direction of senior management. Responsible for establishing and implementing department goals and initiatives and ensures the effective operation of the department. Essential Functions: Directs and manages the resources of the department. Develops procedures for sub-unit/department consistent with division and organization goals. May recommend changes to division policies and procedures. Directs and develops internal and external relationships within department/subunit; interacts with all levels within the organization. Acts as a liaison between senior management and department/subunit on work progress, goals, and strategy. Resolves or oversees the resolution of issues within the sub-unit/department, intervening in issues of complexity and sensitivity. Responsible for departmental decisions and outcomes. Exercises discretion in decision-making based on best practices, technical expertise, and professional judgment. Develops and oversees project/operations budget for a sub-unit/department with input into division budget. May be responsible for revenue-enhancing and/or cost reduction initiatives. Responsible for all HR management within department/subunits, such as: sets and implements performance standards and expectations for professional and career development of team members in subunit, takes corrective action on competency, productivity and performance issues.
