  • Overview of the Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition (NTI) Tension Suppression System

    by Dr. Tomas Anderkvist

At his dental clinic in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, Dr. Tomas Anderkvist offers many state-of-the-art treatments for preventative, cosmetic, and restorative work. For certain sufferers of migraines and tension headaches, Dr. Tomas Anderkvist provides the NTI-tts dental device, described below. NTI-tts stands for Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition Tension Suppression System, and the device treats conditions affecting the trigeminal nerve system. Consisting of two branches, the trigeminal nerve include a motor root, used to control the jaw muscles, as well as a sensory division, which is responsible for sensation in the jaw. The sensory division is further divided into three parts: one that receives sensations from the arteries around the brain and eyes, one that receives sensations from the area below the eyes and in the upper jaw, and another region that receives sensation from the lower jaw. When any division of the trigeminal nerve system becomes hyperactive, the result is increased pain in the form of temporomandibular joint disorder, chronic tension headaches, or migraines. The NTI-tts helps to reduce this pain by suppressing the stimulation of the trigeminal nerve system while the patient sleeps. Before going to bed, the patient inserts the NTI-tts, which prevents the canines and molars from touching while allowing the incisors or front teeth to contact normally. Consequently, the grinding or clenching movements that many individuals produce unconsciously are prevented from stimulating the trigeminal nerve. The NTI-tts works because the incisors are the mouth’s gauge of how hard something is to chew. When you place food in your mouth, the amount of force used by the incisors tells your other teeth how hard they need to chew to break up the food. However, when you grind your canines and molars at night, there is nothing telling those teeth how hard to grind. Without the guidance of the incisors, pressure is built up to excessive levels, leading to tension headaches or other disorders. Dr. Tomas Anderkvist can tell you whether or not an NTI-tts is right for you. If you are experiencing migraines or frequent headaches, see your dentist for treatment options.
