About the Author: Dr. Trueman E. Tryhus, Jr., contributes to the National Parks Conservation Association. A retired dentist and graduate of St. Olaf College, Dr. Trueman E. Tryhus, Jr., also supports the National Wildlife Federation and the World Wildlife Fund.

The National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) has existed for more than 90 years. Though many people have never heard of this organization, it performs an incredible service for the millions who visit national parks every year. In particular, the NPCA’s public service advertisements and fundraising efforts have played a substantial role in maintaining the high level of quality in our national parks over decades.

Founded in 1919, the NPCA is a separate entity from the more familiar National Parks Service (NPS), which was established just three years earlier. A bipartisan membership organization that works exclusively to raise funds and bring awareness to America’s national parks system, the NPCA was known as the National Parks Association until 1970, when its name shifted to reflect the group’s growing concern with pollution and strong belief in preservation.

Though separate from the NPS, the NPCA has featured several trustees that held membership with both groups. Roger Kennedy, for example, served on the Board of Trustees for the NPCA for several years and functioned as a former Director of the NPS. Currently, the group claims over 57 senators and 179 representatives as part of its 600,000 members.

Headquartered in Washington D.C., the NPCA operates an additional 23 regional and field offices located around the country. These offices work in close conjunction with the NPS to keep parks well maintained and funded. In addition to its efforts to fundraise, the NPCA frequently publishes studies on the current state of the country’s parks and manages a quarterly magazine known as National Parks.
