Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology, Tuvia Milsztein
December, 2010
Born and raised in Israel, Mr. Tuvia Milsztein attended Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management. Construction of the Technion commenced in 1912 after Ezra, a German-Jewish fund, identified the need for increased access to higher education in engineering and the sciences. Opening its doors in 1924, Technion quickly grew as a center for scientific education during the subsequent decades. Until the 1970s, Technion was the only engineering school in Israel and it remains a cornerstone of scientific education and research in the country. At Technion, a number of important scientific discoveries were made, including an effective method of skin transplantation, a new Quasicrystal structure, the Lempel-Ziv-Welch algorithm for compression, the programming language PHP, and the biological basis of cell protein disassembly, which secured a Nobel Prize for two of the school’s professors. In order to facilitate its future research projects, Technion has forged collaborative relationships with universities around the world, including Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University and the Mayo Medical School. At present, Technion is home to the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management, and the Signal and Image Processing Lab. Students engage in a number of undergraduate and graduate programs in fields ranging from medicine to science education. In order to inspire an interest in the sciences at a young age, Technion operates several after-school and summer programs through which children can learn about electronics, computer programming, physical sciences and architecture.
