About Uinta Academy

Offering inpatient psychiatric and therapeutic services to troubled girls between the ages of 12 and 18, Uinta Academy functions as a licensed residential treatment center and accredited academic institution in northern Utah near Wellsville. Uinta Academy’s three homes sit on small ranch properties near one another and house 12 to 16 girls in each facility. Students participating in the Uinta Academy program generally stay there for 10 to 12 months, engaging in academic, therapeutic, recreational, household, and ranch activities. To effectively reshape a program participant’s behavior and promote positive change in their lives, Uinta Academy approaches the treatment process with a comprehensive curriculum in mind. Uinta Academy conducts the majority of its activities within the Teaching Family Model, emphasizing the importance of developing skills in social interaction and rational problem solving. The girls attend and participate in daily processes, psycho-educational groups, and family meetings, completing chores around the house and the ranch. Uinta Academy enlists students to help plan and cook meals, further fostering a nurturing atmosphere. Academically, Unita Academy delivers educational programs customized to each individual, catering to each student’s specific needs. Uinta Academy maintains small classroom sizes to allow teachers to provide more attention to each student. Furthermore, Uinta Academy provides general education courses, as well as elective class options, generating a well-rounded educational experience for its students. Outside the home and classroom, Uinta Academy students are taken on monthly excursions that include exploration trips to Yellowstone, Zion, and Teton National Parks. Every girl at Uinta Academy gets a horse to oversee, with responsibility to care of it. This equine therapy helps Uinta Academy students learn how to care for another being and build her own confidence. The parents of Uinta Academy students are updated on a weekly basis on the status of their daughters. Uinta Academy therapists send written reports each week detailing the progress their daughters have made. Parents also participate in weekly therapy sessions conducted over a speakerphone. When a Uinta Academy student prepares to transition back to her own home, a therapist accompanies her and provides support to her and her parents when necessary. Through extensive involvement in a student’s day-to-day activities and obligations, Uinta Academy ensures the girls receive adequate guidance and support until they are ready to return home.
