Working towards a better world

21, Boston, Massachusetts

Ukeme was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. He hopes to pursue a career where he works to improve the well being of others.

Ukeme attended Loyola Jesuit College (LJC), a boarding secondary school run by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. LJC provided the atmosphere for him to develop morally, intellectually, and spiritually inside and outside the classroom. At LJC, Ukeme sharpened the skills and acquired the knowledge that would enable him to succeed as an international student in the United States.

His journey continued at Assumption College where he was admitted with an Aquinas Scholarship. As an undergraduate, Ukeme participated in the Campus Ministry Mexico Mission and represented Assumption at two national conferences. He was also involved in the African, Latino, Asian, and Native American (ALANA) Network and its mission of creating a community that embraces and celebrates the diverse background of its students. He is proud to have been able to work with the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and is thankful for the opportunity it gave him to mature as a student leader and represent his class as salutatorian.

Ukeme is currently involved in an internship with Second Nature’s Advancing Green Building in Higher Education Initiative. He is learning more about sustainability issues, supporting the goals of the initiative by helping to connect minority-serving colleges and universities with the resources and knowledge to construct healthy, energy efficient buildings on their campuses, and promoting the greater cause of a sustainable future.

Ukeme also plans to further his education by working towards a graduate degree program that enables him to work towards his vision of a world where all people have their basic needs met and can pursue their ideals. He acknowledges that all of this would not have been possible without God’s grace in his life, and the support he received from his mentors at Assumption College and beyond.

Currently, Ukeme is reading CK Prahalad’s The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid, and managing his first Kiva portfolio. He recently finished reading Fareed Zakaria’s The Post American World and Len Marrella’s In Search of Ethics.
