Vertical Search Works

Formed when Convera Corporation, a prominent semantic search technology company, merged with Firstlight Online Limited, Vertical Search Works boasts more than a decade of experience providing companies and publishers with software as a service (SaaS) Internet search solutions based on semantic search technology. Vertical Search Works offers several online advertising programs that rely on semantic ad matching technology to couple relevant ads with content. The semantic search technology that Vertical Search Works pioneered makes it possible for search engines to understand the concepts behind words, differentiating between homographs based on context. Vertical Search Works also developed the semantic technology to understand concepts, expressions, and relationships in order to identify similarities in advertising content and publisher page content. The groundbreaking Vertical Search Works semantic ad matching technology reviews content on publisher pages and delivers editorially relevant advertising for optimal response rates. Vertical Search Works offers advertising programs that help publishers increase their ad revenues and advertisers reach their target audiences. VSW FeatureLink, an effective cost per click (CPC) program, adds attention-getting multimedia elements to text link ads, attracting the targeted viewers most likely to respond. Advertisers who use VSW FeatureLink avoid the research and keyword bidding associated with other online advertising programs and pay a flat rate when viewers click their ads. Vertical Search Works simplifies online campaign tracking with a detailed and fully transparent daily online metric reporting system. VSW FeatureLink also serves as an invaluable revenue-boosting tool for publishers, enabling them to display visually appealing, content-appropriate advertisements on their pages. Moreover, Vertical Search Works helps publishers capture additional traffic with VSW Search, an opt-in search engine that viewers can use instead of leaving the page to search.

  • Vertical Search Works: Search Engine Marketing Tips, Part 1
Vertical Search Works (VSW) offers both advertisers and publishers one of the most powerful, semantics-based search and ad-serving systems available today. To build this system, Vertical Search Works has developed a proprietary technological framework paired with millions of word combinations. Vertical Search Works offers some advice on optimizing search engine marketing (SEM) techniques to take full advantage of the VSW FeatureLink product.

    1. Conduct Keyword Research

One of the biggest SEM mistakes companies make is to optimize their content for keywords nobody is searching for. Take advantage of the many research tools online, such as Google AdWords, in order to discover what terms related to your market are being used by searchers. Come up with a comprehensive list of potential terms, and then test them in keyword search tools to create a shortlist. Finally, optimize your website for the terms that rank best.

    2. Add New, High-Quality Content on a Regular Basis

Search engines favor websites that provide high-quality content that is augmented on a regular basis. This helps in two ways. Search engines see the content and assume that the site is active, promoting it in search results. Users also visit the site more often because it is helpful, further confirming to search engines that the content passes the test of high quality.

    3. Focus on Creating “Link Bait”

The old concept of link farming has less currency today as search engines have found ways to identify these tricks and discredit them. Link bait, on the other hand, is content that encourages users to link to your site in a natural way. Examples include useful resources, competitions, and entertaining content.

  • Interview: Vertical Search Works FeatureLink and Search, Part 2
In the first part of our interview covering Vertical Search Works’ FeatureLink and Search technologies, we learned a great deal about the VSW FeatureLink option and how it optimizes content provider and advertising experiences. Now, we discuss the VSW Search feature.

Q: Tell us about the Vertical Search Works Search tool. What does it offer your clients?
A: The Search tool works well in conjunction with FeatureLink to optimize customers’ browsing experiences, making content easy to locate. Our statistics show that Search boosts user engagement and page views, as well as provides incremental revenue for our publishing clients. VSW Search is designed to complement Google’s AdWords service—it will not interfere with that revenue.

Q: How does the Search tool work?
A: Anytime a visitor performs a search on a client’s site, VSW Search generates results in a separate window known as a Search Engine Results Page, or SERP. Existing ad inventory can be placed in a banner or right rail to produce more ad impressions, of which the publisher keeps 100 percent. Additionally, publishers split FeatureLink ad unit revenues 50/50 with Vertical Search Works.

Q: Why should publishing clients use Search?
A: Search comes with several advantages. First, it is completely free. Second, clients can easily integrate Search into their content sites. Third, Search helps keep traffic on client sites instead of driving users to search elsewhere for what they want. Lastly, clients can customize the Search widget and SERP with their own logo, giving it the same look and feel as the rest of the website.

Q: Where is the Search tool located?
A: We pride ourselves on allowing clients to build their websites according to the standards that work best for their company. Publishers may place the Search widget anywhere on their website.
