Ysabel Abreu served at the Alexander Humboldt School in New York City for five years, tailoring her lesson plans to the specific interests and strengths of each student. As a teacher, Ysabel Abreu engaged her students in mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies by providing a constantly changing curriculum designed to capture the attention of her students regardless of their skill level. Working one-on-one with students, Ysabel Abreu addressed their specific academic needs and difficulties, providing them with individualized projects that solidified their understanding and built the self-esteem essential to continued success. Often meeting with parents, Ysabel Abreu not only reported on a student’s progress, but also informed them of the ways in which they could reinforce academic development in the home. A graduate of the City College of New York, Ysabel Abreu holds a Bachelor of Arts in Childhood Education and English. Maintaining a continued dedication to her extracurricular commitments, Ysabel Abreu secured a position in the Golden Key International Honor Society and remains the organization’s Social Director. At present, Ysabel Abreu volunteers at the Dominican Studies Institute Archives and Library, a part of the City University of New York. Working with important primary source documents, Ysabel Abreu is responsible for organizing and cataloguing them for easy future access. In addition, Ysabel Abreu teaches GED and English as a Second Language courses to adults in the City College’s Continuing Education program. Recreationally, Ysabel Abreu is an avid traveler and enjoys visiting a variety of museums and galleries, learning about the cultural heritage of people around the world. A voracious reader, Ysabel Abreu lists David Foster Wallace, Garcia Marquez, and Jorge Luis Borges among her favorite authors. Ysabel Abreu is also working on her own illustrated collection of bilingual (English and Spanish) poetry for children.
